Dirty hands, Dirty girls and Dirty boys!

When I lived in Israel, for some reason I always caught colds in the summer. Regularly. Does the flu spread faster in hot weather…?

I’d be miserable because Israeli summers and freezing air conditioners go hand-in-hand. Every mall, bus, office, classroom greets you with a blast of ice-cold air. For a chick with a sniffling nuisance of a cold – it meant blocked noses, nasal voice and congested sinuses whenever I stepped into a public building. And the tissue! My trademark was wads and wads of used tissue everywhere. Shout out to my mum for being so tolerant when I left them on her dining table! My misery blocked out all sense of propriety. Ahh, those were the days.

I still dislike having a cold in hot weather. Fortunately for me, it hasn’t happened much since I moved back to naija. I wash my hands and keep them away from my face. Works for me. (It’s either that or my immunity is looking up).

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen ladies jump out of the loo without washing their hands. (Don’t even get me started on this topic!)

Unfortunately, those of us who do wash our hands still have to use the same door handles and we have to shake their hands and share the germs…. Kai. Ladies, ladies, ladies! How many times did I call you? Wash your hands whenever you are using a shared loo! Ahn ahn.

By the way, MEN, just because you can, does not mean you should stop and pee out in the open! Nobody wants to see it. Put it away! Lagos walls and gutters have seen wonders!

Apparently…having a cold on a hot Monday in a smoggy city sets loose a cranky blogger. Abeg, let me go and I blow my nose…

  1. Awww, sorry to hear about your cold.

You're right: let us not get started on the topic of leaving a bathroom without washing hands! Yuck x 1000! And men peeing in public...not classy!

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer is a must for me now...I can't imagine not having some around to use.

  4. so sorry about the cold.

This post reminded me of when I was a kid and visited family friends living at the University of Ibadan. One evening as we drove home for the night, we saw a man standing at a wall urinating. You know how in Naija, there is sometimes a gutter in front of walls? Well, we shouted "WAR AGAINST INDISCIPLINE!!!!" at the guy. Poor fellow fell into the gutter as a result. It was hilarious then, but I feel a tinge of guilt about it now. Though, he shouldn't have been urinating in public, shikena.

  5. Nne I sorry for you. Anyway, soon your immunity will build up too. The greatest medical stride in the last century was handwashing! What a pity that we have to beg and be begged to wash our hands. I think thise that know should go and buy latex or rubber gloves (the type they use in clinics) to use for the small room. The main issue shaa is that because there is almost never a running tap, people have simply taken the abnormal as normal and do not wash their hands even when they should.
As per the 'cold' that you have, it may be seasonal allergies. Isreal has a lot of farming and pollen.

Them guys pee on the wall, shame on them, very ridiculous, no one wants to see that, are you kidding me, what's the Lagos government doing about it? What the heck?

Girl, take am easy, Naija la wa, make sure you carry hand sanitizer for real, you can get them at the local stores...and extra tissues to hold to door handles..hope you feel better.

  9. aww...that sucks. when i'm in naija, i always remember to pack a potent bottle of sanitizer in my mind. it's because i dunno who i'll meet and shake their [dirty] hands and when i'll see the next woman frying boli/roasted corn to chop! hygiene is a must!

  10. @ my people, that hand sanitizer sounds like a good idea. It's just not as easy to find here o jare.

Fortunately, the cold is dying down and the cough that followed isn't too bad.

  11. My desk is not very far from the bathroom at my office. Unfortunately, because it is one of those house-turned-office arrangements, men and women share the same bathroom.

You think it's bad that women don't wash their hands? Men - not only do they not wash their hands, they don't flush!!! Because it's just pee. Are you freaking kidding me? And then we have to touch the same door handles, pick up the same files, use the same hole punch... It drives me crazy. Imma invest hand sanitizer too.
